The Bible gives us permission to be disappointed w

The Bible gives us permission to be disappointed with God.

Read Psalm 13. David begins with the painfully honest question, “How long, O Lord? Will you forget me forever?” He feels forgotten. He asks why God seems absent. He doesn't tidy up his emotions before bringing them to God.

And yet, the psalm moves toward trust. (You know I love the psalms.)

That’s what I love about biblical lament. It doesn't demand that we pretend everything is fine. It gives us language for the gap between what we hoped God would do and what we're actually experiencing.

David doesn't have to silence his questions to stay in relationship with God. He brings the questions into the relationship.

Maybe brave faith isn't having fewer questions. Maybe it's learning to bring our hardest questions to a God who isn't threatened by our honesty.

Read: Psalm 13; Psalm 22:1–5; Habakkuk 1:2–4.

Have you ever been hurt by what happened—and then

Have you ever been hurt by what happened—and then hurt all over again because it wasn’t supposed to happen that way?

I have expectations of how I think God will respond. I assume faithfulness will lead to certain outcomes. I assume obedience will be rewarded with easier circumstances. I assume my prayers will be answered because they seem so reasonable.

And then life still smashes me.

Sometimes we carry not only the pain of what happened but also the pain of what was supposed to happen.

I’m learning that disappointment doesn’t have to become cynicism. I can grieve what I hoped for. I can complain to God about God. I can tell the truth about my hurt without deciding that hurt gets to define my relationship with God.

What’s something you expected would turn out differently—and how has that disappointment affected your faith?

What if some of your disappointment with God comes

What if some of your disappointment with God comes not from who God is, but from who you expected God to be?

That doesn’t make your pain less real. It might give you a more honest place to begin.

Worth trying to pray. Even as you soul can't be quieted to pray. It's better than numbing the panic. It's better than doing nothing. Yes, prayer does involve trust. In the midst of panic, it is hard to trust. It's still a better option.
